The history of the Verdi family dates back to the eighteenth century, when Antonio Verdi from the Duchy of Parma settled in Oltrepo Pavese. Since then, four generations have succeeded each other. Each of them took care of the family lands. Already with Luigi, in the course of the third generation, in the care of the vineyards, the Greens joined the art of transforming the grapes into wine making wine makers and building the first wine cellar. From Luigi comes Clemente, from these Alfredo, Cavaliere di Vittorio Veneto, then Bruno, the first to bottle and decorate his bottles with his own label, in the years immediately after the war, and now his son Paolo.
The cellar
The family winery of the Verdi family is located in the Vergomberra area of Canneto Pavese and still preserves the premises of the very first Verdi winery. There, even today, oak barrels are arranged for the maturation of some red wines.
The premises for the storage of white and some red wines are thermo-conditioned. For the vinification of red wines, the company follows the traditional method without, however, neglecting the best contributions from modern oenological techniques. Their purpose is to keep intact the peculiar characteristics of aromas and flavors. The grapes destined to produce white wines are harvested by hand strictly in perforated boxes in order to preserve their integrity from the vineyard to the cellar. Moscato and Riesling Renano after being cooled are gently de-stemmed to be then cryomacerate. The other grapes (Pinot and Riesling Italico) are softly pressed. The fermentation of the musts takes place in a thermo-conditioned environment, following the bottling with its own modern equipment.
The vineyard and the territory
The relief that lies between the Scuropasso and Versa torrents that give the name to the respective valleys, occupies a position of exceptional importance in the Oltrepo ‘Pavese oenology. This is the so-called first hill range. Not surprisingly, on these hills are the two most important subzones of the Oltrepo ‘where the Buttafuoco and the Blood of Giuda are produced.
“Respect for the vineyard, the vine and the wine combined with heart, passion and mind”: these are the words used to describe the “Bruno Verdi” winery. Do not miss the chance to try their delicious products.
