The Wine
The Nigra from the Romaldo Greco winery is 100% Negroamaro grapes grown in the vineyards owned by the winery. We are in Seclì in the province of Lecce, a flat area (76 meters above sea level) where the soil is generally clayey.
Why is this wine called Nigra? To pay homage to Negroamaro, whose name derives from the fusion of the Latin word “nigra” and the Greek word “mavros”, both meaning “black” and referring to the colour of the grape. So Negroamaro means black-black.
THE WINEMAKING
The harvest, which takes place in mid September, is strictly manual; the selected grapes are collected in small boxes and taken immediately to the cellar for winemaking. After soft pressing, the must macerates on the skins for about 15 days. Temperature-controlled fermentation takes place in steel tanks. The wine then ages for approximately 12 months in steel. After blending and bottling, the wine rests in the cellar for a few more months before being released on the market.
THE TASTING
Ruby red with violet reflections. The aroma is elegant, with pleasant floral notes of violet that intertwine with hints of red and black fruits to leave room for spicy puffs. Soft and fresh on the palate, the tannins are balanced and well-integrated. Excellent note of acidity that encourages drinking. Persistence is also remarkable.
FOOD PAIRINGS
Excellent with red meats, game and hard cheeses. Try it with grilled meat.
