The wine Picolit by Rodaro winery
The Picolit Rodaro comes from Picolit grapes grown in the property’s vineyards. We are talking about an indigenous Friulian vineyard used to create a sweet and delicate wine, one of a kind but not cloying wine.
Luigi Veronelli, a famous philosopher and food and wine writer, described it as “Firm and aristocratic; it has strong strength and high fabric, which is pleasing to the point of a peacock’s tail; a very great wine, a meditation wine“.
Respect for the environment and the work done in the vineyard with a view to sustainability, together with the low production per hectare, enhance the quality and refinement of the production of plain wines, giving a unique character to this line of wines.
THE WINEMAKING
The grapes are harvested by hand in 2kg boxes; the harvest occurs between the end of September and the beginning of October when the grapes are partially dried. The grapes dry further in specially ventilated rooms, and the winemaking begins in January. The grapes are pressed softly; fermentation occurs at a controlled temperature in steel tanks. The wine ages for a period ranging from 24 to 36 months, depending on the vintage. Once bottled, the wine rests in the cellar for a few more months before being released on the market.
Tasting the Picolit by Rodaro
Amber is in colour with honey-coloured nuances; the aroma is pleasantly intense, with hints of toffee that intertwine with notes of orange peel, dried figs, and dates, leaving room for floral hints of roses. On the finish, you can perceive spicy puffs of cinnamon and cloves. On the palate, it is rich and sweet but never cloying, with a perfect correspondence between aromas and flavour. It is well structured and perfectly balanced, with a long, persistent finish.
FOOD PAIRINGS
It goes well with blue cheeses and desserts, but we recommend it as a meditation wine thanks to its quality.
THE WINERY
The first official document relating to the Rodaro winery dates back to March 23, 1846. At that time, the Rodaro family were small landowners in Friuli under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Part of their land had vines, but the true foundation of the Rodaro winery was established thanks to the daily dedication of Uncle Edo in caring for the vineyard and winery, along with the entrepreneurial spirit of his brother Luigi. The winery expanded when his son Paolo joined the enterprise and led the company. Today, Rodaro is one of the most dynamic wineries in the Friuli region… keep reading
