The Wine
The Riserva Mazon Pinot Noir of the Hofstatter winery is 100% Pinot Noir grapes grown in the vineyards owned by the winery located on the Mazon plateau, an area in the province of Bolzano. The wine takes its name from this very plateau. We are in Trentino Alto Adige, and it is here that at the beginning of the 19th century, the locals decided to cultivate Pinot Noir, a typical French vine.
The Hofstatter winery soon understood that the Mazon plateau, thanks to its microclimate, was the ideal place to cultivate this vine. Pinot Noir has become one of the flagships of this winery which has managed to give a modern and unique style to a vine with a great history.
THE WINEMAKING
After manual harvesting, the selected grapes are taken to the cellar for winemaking. 75% of the grapes get destemmed, while the remaining 25% are left the whole bunch. This step guarantees freshness and the typical balance of the vine; it follows the fermentation on the skins that lasts at least ten days in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The wine refines in small oak barrels for at least a year; after twelve months, it is assembled and transferred to large oak barrels, where it rests for six months. At the end of this second refinement, the wine is bottled and left in the cellar for another year before being released onto the market.
THE TASTING
Intense ruby red; the aroma is elegant with typical hints of berries that alternate with cherry to close with scents of undergrowth and spicy puffs thanks to the passage in wood. Warm and refined on the palate, this velvety Pinot Noir is well structured with a long and persistent finish. It is not afraid of the passing of time and we recommend buying a few bottles to “forget” in the cellar.
