The Wine
The Pinot Noir Ludwig Barth von Bartheneau Vigna Roccolo from the Hofstatter winery is 100% Pinot Noir grapes grown in the vineyards owned by the winery, located in the Mazon plateau in Bolzano. This is a prestigious Cru where some vines are over 70 years old. Nice to know, that in Alto Adige, only the denomination “Vigna” guarantees that the wine comes from that specific vineyard.
The vineyard is called Roccolo because when it was still owned by Ludwig Barth von Bartheneau, near the vineyard there was a “Rocolo”, an ancient place for capturing birds.
THE WINEMAKING
After manual harvesting, the selected grapes are taken to the cellar for winemaking; the grapes get destemmed and manually selected The winemaking begins with a day of cold maceration which serves to refine the bouquet; follows the fermentation on the skins that lasts at least ten days in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The wine refines in small oak barrels for at least a year; after twelve months, it is assembled and transferred to large oak barrels, where it rests for another six months. At the end of this second refinement, the wine is bottled and left in the cellar for another year before being released onto the market.
THE TASTING
Very intense ruby red; the aroma is elegant with pleasant notes of black cherry alternating with hints of cranberry that leave room for puffs of vanilla and delicate spicy hints. Warm and refined on the palate; this Pinot Noir is well structured with velvety tannins and a very long and persistent finish. It is not afraid of the passing of time, we recommend you buy a few bottles to “forget” in the cellar.
FOOD PAIRINGS
Perfect with red meats, game and not too spicy hard cheeses.
