The Wine
The Pinot Noir Barthenau Vigna Sant’ Urbano from the Hofstatter winery is 100% Pinot Noir grapes grown in the vineyards owned by the winery, located in the BARTHENAU estate on the Mazon plateau in Bolzano. We are in a prestigious Cru where some vines are over 55 years old. Nice to know, that in Alto Adige, only the denomination “Vigna” guarantees that the wine comes from that specific vineyard.
The Hofstatter winery soon understood that the Mazon plateau, thanks to its microclimate, was the ideal place to cultivate this vine. Pinot Noir has become one of the flagships of this winery which has managed to give a modern and unique style to a vine with a great history.
THE WINEMAKING
After manual harvesting, the selected grapes are taken to the cellar for winemaking. 75% of the grapes get destemmed, while the remaining 25% are left the whole bunch. This step guarantees freshness and the typical balance of the vine. The winemaking begins with a day of cold maceration which serves to refine the bouquet; follows the fermentation on the skins that lasts at least ten days in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The wine refines in small oak barrels for at least a year; after twelve months, it is assembled and transferred to large oak barrels, where it rests for another year. At the end of this second refinement, the wine is bottled and left in the cellar for another eight months before being released onto the market.
THE TASTING
Deep ruby red; the aroma is elegant with typical Burgundy scents; notes of black cherry alternate with hints of raspberry that leave room for puffs of vanilla and delicate spicy hints. Warm and refined on the palate; this Pinot Noir is well structured with velvety tannins and a very long and persistent finish. It is not afraid of the passing of time, we recommend you buy a few bottles to “forget” in the cellar.
FOOD PAIRINGS
Perfect with red meats, game and not too spicy hard cheeses.
