IL VINO
The Ziller 47 from the Tenuta Gorghi Tondi winery is produced with 100% Grillo grapes grown in vineyards owned by the winery. We are near Mazara del Vallo in the westernmost part of Sicily, a stone’s throw from the sea and the sea breezes. The estate is located within a nature reserve protected by the WWF.
The winery is a family-run winery run by women, and since 2016 all vineyards have been certified organic, which means that all the wines are organic and carry the famous green leaf on the label. Both in the vineyard and in the cellar, there is the utmost respect for nature and its balance.
Ziller 47 is the traditional wine dedicated to Michele Sala, the current winery owner’s father. Ziller is the nickname given to Michele by his friends, a precise, punctual and stubborn person, while 47 is his year of birth. This wine is not a fortified wine, but it takes inspiration from fortified wines and spends a lot of time in barrels. With a significant alcohol content, it is a wine that looks to tradition but with a contemporary key. Ziller 47 is perfect to close your meals.
THE WINEMAKING
After the harvest, only the selected grapes go to the cellar for winemaking, which begins with soft pressing and quick maceration. The must ferments in steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The refinement instead takes place in large 20 hl French oak barrels where the wine ages for eleven years on the noble lees. After bottling, the wine rests for another six months in the cellar before being released onto the market.
THE TASTING
Deep golden with amber reflections. The aroma is pleasant with fruity notes of dried apricot that give way to hints of spicy pear and candied citron to close with spicy notes. Dry but fresh on the palate with a perfect correspondence between aromas and flavour and a long and persistent finish.
FOOD PAIRINGS
Ziller 47 is perfect as a meditation wine or at the end of a meal. Try it with blue cheese.
