Song Cai Distillery Spiced Roselle Gin
The Song Cai Distillery Spiced Roselle uses Quâ sim pink berries, which grow wild in the central highlands of Vietnam; like all of the distillery’s gins, this gin is produced in small batches using a direct-fire copper still that is fed by hand; the base of the gin is rice alcohol and molasses.
Viet Nam Spiced Roselle has a ruby colour thanks to the Sim berries this colour recalls the red soils where the berries grow and the traditional fabrics of the local people. It is a gin that truly embodies the spirit of the land.
Tasting
This gin from Sông Cái Distillery has fruity aromas of cherry and dried plum, which give way to notes of aniseed and continue with spicy hints of cinnamon, ginger and black pepper. Warm and tangy on the palate with soft tannins and a delicate acidity. The finish is long and rich with notes of dried fruit, spice and hints of wood.
The Song Cal distillery produces Spiced Roselle Gin and other quality gins.
We are in Vietnam; the master distiller Daniel Nguyen founded the Song Cai Distillery in 2018; he studied the biodiversity and botanicals of rural Viêt Nam for six years before starting his company.
In Vietnamese Sông Cái means Mother River. The distillery chose this name because, in Vietnamese tradition, all forces of nature, life and spirituality come from a holistic “mother river”.
Daniel distilled the first gin produced in Vietnam with local Botanics; he partnered with local indigenous people who lent themselves to selecting and harvesting the best botanicals. Now, over 70 families work for the Sông Cái distillery; the distillery offers rural communities an incentive to preserve local crops and botanicals.
