Monsupello winery
Excellence in Oltrepò: a story of values
A History of Values
The Monsupello winery was founded in 1893 in the municipality of Oliva Gessi, located in the heart of Oltrepò Pavese, by the Boatti family. Today, it is a family-run winery led by Carlo Boatti and his children, Pierangelo and Laura, which spans 50 hectares of vineyards. Carlo has carefully selected the best vineyard parcels in Oltrepò to produce top-quality wines.
At Monsupello, environmental sustainability and biodiversity are top priorities. The winery employs grassing practices in the vineyards to return nutrients and nitrogen to the soil, enhancing its organic content and fostering biological activity. The soil fertility is also attributed to the winery’s commitment to low-yield cultivation, allowing each vineyard to ripen at its own pace without being rushed.
The Family
Grapes run in Carlo Boatti’s blood; his mother, Paolina Luigina, worked in the vineyards while in labour. Carlo has been at the helm of the company since 1954, during which time he has transformed the winery into a respected establishment in the wine community. He has expanded the vineyard area, selected optimal locations, and introduced an innovative and knowledgeable approach to choosing the best grapes while respecting and enhancing the aromatic profiles of their wines. His wife, Carla Dallera Boatti, has also been an integral part of the team, contributing her entrepreneurial vision. Under Carlo’s leadership, Monsupello has gained recognition and appreciation in the wine world, earning accolades from notable figures like Luigi Veronelli and Gianni Brera.
Today, the winery is managed by Carlo’s children, Pierangelo and Laura, but the Monsupello style remains unchanged.
The Terroir
The Monsupello’s vineyards grow between 160 and 200 meters above sea level, with clayey and calcareous tuffaceous soils that provide excellent conditions for producing wines with mineral nuances, freshness, and elegance. The estate cultivates various grape varieties, including Pinot Noir, Croatina, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Grigio, Riesling Renano, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, and Moscato, with Nebbiolo and Müller-Thurgau recently added.
The land slopes promote grape ripening, while the winds ensure healthy bunches; the temperature variations between day and night enhance the wine’s aromatic profiles.
Monsupello and Social Responsibility
The winery is deeply committed to social issues, believing in support and providing second chances. This commitment led to the creation of a new wine called Sprigionato, aimed at raising funds for the Terre di Mezzo Association; in 2023, inmates from the Voghera super prison participated in the first harvest under this social sustainability initiative.
