The Mastiha Spirit by Skinos Distillery
Mastiha Spirit from Skinos Distillery is a liqueur that smells of resin, mint and Mediterranean spices, with a taste that recalls the sweet and sour of nature; it is a unique product born on the island of Chios in Greece, where the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus), a tree that we find in various areas of the Mediterranean, produces a precious resin, known as mastic, used since ancient times.
Mastic is an ancient ingredient: already in 600 B.C. it was used as an elixir. Skinos has conquered international palates with this distillate, winning a gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Awards in 2011. Today, it is a must in European cocktail bars, appreciated for its versatility and authenticity.
If you are passionate about unique liqueurs, Mastiha Spirit is worth a try.
Production process
The mastic is harvested by hand with incisions on the trunk of the mastic tree, following a thousand-year-old method. After three months of maceration in alcohol, the resin is distilled in copper stills without artificial flavours. Unlike other products, Skinos favours complete distillation, avoiding simple maceration. The result is a 30% vol. liqueur diluted with sugar syrup and water, maintaining a perfect balance between softness and structure.
Tasting experience
On the nose, Mastiha Spirit offers dominant resin notes, vegetable scents of carrot and cucumber, fresh mint and celery. The complexity shows with balsamic and spicy hints, typical of the Mediterranean; the sweet and sour blend with a dry and balsamic finish on the palate creates an experience that recalls a liqueur and a brandy.
How to serve
To enjoy it at its best, serve it chilled at the end of a meal as a natural digestive. In winter, try it hot in a spicy punch. But Mastiha Spirit is also a great base for summer cocktails like the Mediterranean Mule with ginger beer, lime and mint leaves. Mastiha, rich in digestive properties, is perfect for those looking for a functional and refined product.
For an extra touch, serve it with lemon zest or a mint leaf.
The distillery
Skinos is the only producer in the world to make a mastic resin distillate following a traditional method dating back to 600 BC.
