Barolo, the wine

It is called  “King of the wines or wine of the king”,  it is the Barolo, a special wine well know all over the world.  Made with the Nebbiolo grapes that grow across 11 Boroughs of an area named “Langhe” in Piedmont (north – west of Italy) and is named after one of these Boroughs. if you have never visited the “Langhe” I strongly recommend you do! ; the landscape is breathtaking with hills and vineyards in between castles and historic towns.

Grape variety and aging
Actually the Nebbiolo grows all over Piedmont so why is Barolo produced only across those 11 Boroughs of the Langhe area?  Well simply because of the climate and the soil; the  Nebbiolo grown in this area has a much hight quality respect to the Nebbiolo grown in other areas of the region; the grape ripening is quite long, the harvest happens towards the end of November.
The region Piedmont has several good quality wines but the Barolo is for sure the shining star but it needs time; it goes thought at list a two years aging process (minimum 18 months in barrel) and gives it best minimum 4 years after the harvest.

Colors, aroma and taste.
Tasting the Barolo is a unique experience. The color is unmistakable ruby red when it is young, tends to get orange tones with age. it is clear, nearly see-through. The aromas are also unique; immediately you can perceive  the hints of red berries like raspberry and cherry followed by spicy notes of pepper and nutmeg ending with licorice scents. Elegant and perfectly structured on the palate, you can taste all the aromas you felt on your nose. this wine is just perfect!

Food pairing
As Barolo is an important wine it needs to be paired with important recipes ; keep checking my blog and very shortly I will post a very nice one but for now, keep in mind that Barolo is perfect with red meat and hard cheeses.
