The winery

The winery was founded in 1960 when Ferruccio Sgubin fell in love with the Mernico Hill in Dolegna del Collio, located in Friuli Venezia Giulia. This marked the beginning of his winemaking journey. It is a family-run business that has been cultivating plots, parcels, and crus with rich histories for over 60 years.

Today, the winery is managed by Ferruccio’s children and grandchildren, although Ferruccio, now almost ninety years old, remains actively involved in the company.

The territory

Ferruccio Sgubin spans 1,600 hectares of vineyards, 85% of which host white grapes. This area, recognized for its excellence, received the DOC Collio designation in 1968. The winery is located in a crescent shape between the Julian Prealps and the Adriatic Sea.

The Prealps to the north shield the vineyards from northern winds, while the Adriatic Sea to the south helps to moderate temperatures. This combination creates a mild and temperate climate that is ideal for viticulture.

The soil, known as Ponca, consists of friable layers of marl interspersed with harder layers of sandstone; these alternating layers effectively regulate water availability for the plants. This soil is rich in minerals and microelements, which contribute to the uniqueness of Collio wines

Organic winery

Ferruccio’s heirs strongly believe in evolving the company while honouring its past, present, and future. They are committed to sustainability, which led to the certification of the winery as organic.

With the 2023 vintage, all Ferruccio Sgubin wines, including the Petruss and Mirnik reserves, will feature an organic label. The winery views this certification as a significant achievement that reflects its ongoing commitment to producing wines that respect the territory and honour the work of local farmers.

The wines

The wines produced by the Ferruccio Sgubin winery are the perfect expression of the territory: mineral, elegant, and structured.

About the wines, you can choose the Ferruccio Sgubin line, the Petruss reserves and Mirnik two blends named after the first piece of land purchased and cultivated by Grandfather Ferruccio. These two cuvées are crafted from a blend of grapes that best reflect the identity of Collio, encapsulating the essential characteristics of the terroir: minerality, structure, and depth.

Visitors to the winery can also enjoy a meal at Ferruccio Sgubin’s restaurant, Al Cjant dal Rusignul, which is recognized among the Excellences of Gambero Rosso.
