THE WINE
The Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento from the Col D’Orcia winery comes from a selection of Sangiovese grapes grown on the Sant’Angelo in Colle Hill overlooking the Orcia River. The vineyard called Poggio al Vento, from which the wine itself takes its name, was planted in 1974.
Both the processing in the vineyard and the winemaking in the cellar follow the strict protocols of the organic regulations.
THE WINEMAKING
The harvest is strictly manual and begins only when the bunches have reached the right level of ripeness. Once in the cellar, fermentation occurs at a controlled temperature of 28 °C in steel vats with a capacity of 50 hl. The grapes macerate for 20-25 days with daily pumping and delestages. In the spring following the harvest, the wine decants into wooden barrels. The wine ages for at least three years in oak barrels, and after blending and bottling, it remains in the cellar for a further twenty-four months before being placed on the market.
THE TASTING
Intense ruby red. The aroma is elegant, with pleasant hints of small red fruits that alternate with spicy notes where pepper and cloves are perceived; it closes with toasted sensations due to the passage in wood. It is very well structured and enveloping on the palate with soft and silky tannins. This Brunello is exceptionally well balanced with a long and persistent finish.
FOOD PAIRINGS
With meat menus, it is perfect throughout the meal. Try it with the classic Florentine steak.
