IL VINO
The Spassoso from the Tenuta Gorghi Tondi winery is a blend of Nero d’Avola, Syrah e Perricone grapes in percentages that vary depending on the vintage, grown in vineyards owned by the winery. We are near Mazara del Vallo in the westernmost part of Sicily, a stone’s throw from the sea and the sea breezes. The estate is located within a nature reserve protected by the WWF.
The winery is a family-run winery run by women, and since 2016 all vineyards have been certified organic, which means that all the wines are organic and carry the famous green leaf on the label. Both in the vineyard and in the cellar, there is the utmost respect for nature and its balance.
Spassoso is born from the attitude of the winery, confident and always optimistic. It is an intriguing and fruity wine where the Perricone grapes, once harvested, dry for about ten days in the fruit cellar and then wine made separately.
The label fully represents Sicily through a collage of images ranging from art to nature to tradition, music and conviviality, so important for this land; this wine makes fall-in-love enthusiasts and those not used to drinking Sicilian wines.
THE WINEMAKING
The grapes are harvested towards the end of September and only the selected ones are brought to the winery for winemaking. The Perricone grapes are left to dry for about ten days in the fruit cellar and then wine is made separately. The must macerated for about ten days and fermented in steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The refinement is also in steel where the wine ages for about five months on the noble lees. After assembly and bottling, the wine rests for a few more months in the cellar before being released onto the market.
THE TASTING
Shining ruby red with light purple highlights; the aroma is pleasant with fruity hints of plum, berries and morello cherries that intertwine with notes of mulberry to close with spicy hints. This wine is intense and well-structured on the palate with a present but light tannin and a long and persistent finish.
FOOD PAIRINGS
Spassoso is excellent with cold cuts, red meat and medium-hard cheeses. Try it with the classic meat hamburger.
