IL VINO
The Meridiano 12 Syrah from the Tenuta Gorghi Tondi winery is produced with 100% Syrah grapes, grown in vineyards owned by the winery. We are near Mazara del Vallo in the westernmost part of Sicily, a stone’s throw from the sea and the sea breezes. The estate is located within a nature reserve protected by the WWF.
The winery is a family-run winery run by women, and since 2016 all vineyards have been certified organic, which means that all the wines are organic and carry the famous green leaf on the label. Both in the vineyard and in the cellar, there is the utmost respect for nature and its balance.
The wine is part of the I territorial line and is called Meridiano 12 because the twelfth meridian crosses the vineyards the grapes grow in; the Syrah grape is among the oldest native varieties grown in Sicily, and the wine, thanks to the climatic conditions, has a pleasant savoury note and intense aroma and flavour.
THE WINEMAKING
After the grape harvest which takes place in the first ten days of September, only the selected grapes go to the cellar for winemaking, which begins with two week maceration on the skins. The must ferments in steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The refinement also occurs in steel, where the wine ages for about nine months on the noble lees. After assembly and bottling, the wine rests for a few more months in the cellar before being released on the market.
THE TASTING
Ruby red with purple reflections. The aroma is pleasantly fruity with hints of red fruits such as raspberry, blackberry and cherry, leaving room for notes of sage to close with scents of black pepper typical of this grape variety. This wine is intense on the palate, with a pleasant savoury note and a soft tannin. The finish is long and persistent.
FOOD PAIRINGS
This Meridiano 12 Syrah pairs well with red meats, game and hard cheeses. Try it with duck.
