The wine Mirnik Bianco by Ferruccio Sgubin

Mirnik Bianco (White) and Mirnik Rosso (red) are the signature wines from Ferruccio Sgobin’s winery. These wines are named after the first piece of land that Ferruccio purchased and cultivated. They are blends of Sauvignon, Friulano and Pinot Bianco grapes, crafted to accurately reflect the identity of Collio and capture the essential characteristics of the region’s terroir, including minerality, structure, and depth.

Over the years, these vineyards have shown remarkable resilience and high-quality potential, even in challenging vintages. They have produced exceptional grapes capable of yielding wines that age beautifully over time.

THE WINEMAKING

The vineyards are in two distinct areas of the property. The first vineyard, about 35 years old, is relatively small and located on a soil type known as Isch di Cormons, which features alternating layers of Marl and Eocene-origin sandstone. The second vineyard is a few kilometres away, positioned on a different hill of Pleistocene origin, and is called Isch di Grivò.

The harvest is conducted strictly by hand, ensuring the grapes are picked at their peak ripeness. Once delivered to the cellar, the three grape varieties are wine-made separately. All grapes undergo fermentation at a controlled temperature of 18 °C using selected yeasts. For ageing, the Friulano and Sauvignon wines mature in stainless steel containers, while the Pinot Bianco ages in first-passage French tonneaux. After blending and bottling, the wine rests in the cellar for at least six months before being released.

Straw-yellow with a complex aroma featuring the characteristic notes of the grape varieties; pleasant hints of wildflowers and aromatic herbs, culminating in tones reminiscent of acacia honey. This wine is well-structured on the palate and easy to drink, thanks to its minerality and softness.

FOOD PAIRINGS

It pairs well with fish, shellfish and white meats. Try it with pasta and risotto..

The winery was founded in 1960 when Ferruccio Sgubin fell in love with the Mernico Hill in Dolegna del Collio, located in Friuli Venezia Giulia. This marked the beginning of his winemaking journey.
