THE WINE
The Pinot Grigio Joy from the Castello di Spessa winery is part of the Collio line; 100% Pinot Grigio grapes grown in vineyards owned by the winery and located in Capriva del Friuli. The vineyards are in the heart of the DOC Friuli, not far from the border with Slovenia, where the soil is made of clay and sand with gravel that in Friuli is known as “ponca”.
THE WINEMAKING
After the harvest that occurs at the end of August, the selected grapes are taken to the cellar for winemaking; it begins with a maceration of the skins that lasts from ten to fifteen hours at a constant temperature of 6° C; this step is done to extract both the color and a bouquet of aromas as broad and complex as possible. The fermentation in steel tanks at a controlled temperature is followed by the refinement which occurs in steel and lasts until the March following the harvest. After assembly and bottling, the wine rests for a few more months in the cellar before being released on the market.
THE TASTING
Copper in color, it looks a lot like onion skin; the aroma is pleasant with fruity notes of pear and pomegranate, finishing with hints of raspberries. Warm and soft on the palate, well structured with an excellent correspondence between aromas and flavor. The persistence is also great.
FOOD PAIRINGS
The Pinot Grigio Joy goes well with fish, white meats, and soft cheeses. Try it with vegetable soups.
