The Product
Millonario 15 Reserva Especial is the first rum produced by Ron Millionario; it is the pioneer leading the company to success. This rum matures for fifteen years in oak barrels and, it is the most balanced of the distillery’s rums. Made with molasses from native South American sugar cane, fermentation occurs thanks to local yeasts while distillation occurs in the majestic Scottish still that dates back to 1938.
Each bottle is covered with hand-woven Toquilla palm leaves from Catacaos city in northern Peru. It is an iconic and elegant package which evokes tradition and popular craftsmanship.
The Tasting
The aroma is fragrant and intense; hints of candied fruit and plums intertwine with cocoa and coconut scents to close with cloves puffs; sweet and slightly vinous on the palate, you can perceive the flavours of sultanas, chocolate and toffee. The finish is long and delicious.
It is a shame to use this rum in cocktails; we recommend you taste the Millonario 15 Reserva Especial, neat with ice and some dark chocolate.
The Distillery
Ron Millionario was officially born in 1950, but its history begins much earlier and more precisely in 1904 when a group of farmers founded the Hacienda Agrícola de Chiclayo, a small refinery to trade their sugar in north Peru.
In 1922, the Peruvian landowner family Piera de Castillo purchased the hacienda, the refinery and the vast sugar cane plantation.
In 1933, Don Rolando, the founder of the Piera de Castillo family, sent his firstborn Augusto, to study chemical engineering at Cambridge University. In the summer of 1938, Augusto returned to Peru from England with a ship full of valuable machinery needed to distil rum.
