We are visiting Spolert in Prepotto in the north east of Friuli Venezia Giulia. A new winery that the current owner (Riccardo Caliari) and his wife bought three years ago.

Riccardo’s main objective is to enhance the native wine and the local customs; this is the reason why he chose Spolert as the name of his winery. Spolet in the Friulian tradition was the center of the kitchen used for cooking food, but also to spread heat throughout the house. When you go to visit the winery, you will find the original splert, the one that belong to the old owners; Riccardo restored it to its splendor and now it is the leading actor of the winery.

First of all, Riccardo and his wife dedicated themselves to the vines; they added 4 hectares of vineyard to the property, and then they enhanced the welcome also, also renovating the barrel cellar. First harvest took place in 2018 and the first wines went on the market in autumn 2019. The company adopts voluntary integrated pest management; both the work in the vineyard and in the cellar are carried out with the utmost respect for the environment.

Spolert has two main characteristics: no steel is used for winemaking, the whites are wine made and refined in concrete tanks, the reds in earthenware amphora (made of a mix of terra cotta and ceramic) designed and created by Francesco Tava. Why the amphora? The qualities of the wine are greatly amplified

Today Spolert offers 2 product lines, the basic line which is the one currently on the market, and a “reserve” line which will be released in autumn 2020.

If you find yourself near Prepotto you must absolutely go to Spolert, you will find a young couple ready to welcome you and make you feel at home even on Sundays !!!
