Ciao, today I’ll take you to the Il Poggiarello winery in Piacenza, Emilia Romagna.
I admit that even before tasting the wines, this winery had struck me for the labels of the “I Volti” (the faces) line; each wine has a dedicated face representing the wine itself. I loved the idea, but let’s get back to the winery; we are in Val Trebbia among the Piacenza woods.
This small company is part of the Cantine 4 Valli group, a winery founded way back in 1882 thanks to the agreement between the Ferrari and Perini families; they are the ones who made the history of wine in Piacenza. The company has grown over the years but is still a family-run business. Today reins are firmly in the hands of the fifth generation.
The Il Poggiarello farm was born in the 80s when the fourth generation of the families arrived in the company; the cousins decided to buy 20 hectares in Val Trebbia, an area that has important oenological and cultural value for Piacenza, with the desire to become ambassadors of the territory thanks to excellent wines. Certainly, an ambitious project that the company is successfully carrying forward.
The winery
The traditions of past generations are still followed and, the grapes are all certified organic. The winery philosophy has four simple words: territory, uniqueness, simplicity and ambition.
Wine is made in the vineyard the outcome is the expression of the territory. The certified organic vineyards, the attention in the cellar and the thousand-year history of Piacenza wine are the ingredients for extraordinary wines. Every wine produced by the Il Poggiarello winery is a little gem because they carefully selected the best native grapes.
The wines are straightforward and never banal. The winery defines them as companion wines, perfect for large tables of friends and family. They are wines that manage to surprise and raise a smile.
Il Poggiarello winery is ambitious and wants to tell about Piacenza outside Piacenza thanks to a glass of wine. We think they have succeeded because by tasting their wines you will fall in love with them.
The wines
Let’s talk a bit about the winery wines. Let’s start with “I Volti”, as I mentioned before, a line that immediately struck me; each wine tells a story and has a different face on the label that expresses the mood of the wine itself. You can choose between Sauvignon, Malvasia, Pinot Nero, Gutturnio Superiore and Gutturnio Riserva, all worth trying.
If you like sparkling wines, there are “Gli Spaghi” (the strings), Gutturnio and Ortrugo. The sparkling wine per Piacenza tradition, has the typical hand-tied string on the cork.
Then there are Cecco and Mami, the wines that the winery defines as born and raised in Piacenza: a white wine and a red wine that fully represent the territory of origin.
How can I not mention the Barbera “il Piston”? It is available only in the one-and-a-half litre magnum format as per local tradition. And finally, there is L’Alba e la Pietra, a macerated white wine so-called to recall the dawn that lights up the Pietra Parcellara in Val Trebbia.
Believe me, they are all delicious and you have to taste them all!
Have fun and we will talk soon
ciao
Monica
