Paolo Caccese winery

Paolo Caccese la cantina

Today, I want to take you on a visit to the Paolo Caccese winery, located in the heart of the Collio Friulano, among the hills of Pradis in Cormòns. This winery is a testament to a family tradition upheld with passion and respect for the environment. Founded in the 1950s, the company has grown over the years while remaining rooted in its origins and enhancing the local territory by producing authentic, high-quality wines.

The Origins of a Family Adventure

The story began in the 1950s when Francesco Caccese, an engineer and prefectural commissioner at Villa Russiz, became intrigued by the world of viticulture. In 1954, he purchased two and a half hectares of vineyards on the hills of Pradis. During the 1970s, his son Paolo, who initially pursued a legal career, decided to follow his true passion and took over the family business. With the support of his wife, Veronica, he expanded the property in the 1990s by acquiring an additional three and a half hectares of vineyards, leading to the creation of new wines, including a sweet passito dedicated to Veronica.

A Unique Terroir

The winery is situated in Collio, one of the most suitable regions for viticulture in Friuli-Venezia Giulia; here, the mild climate and soils rich in marl and sandstone—known as “ponca”—create perfect conditions for producing wines with great personality and finesse. This unique combination of natural factors gives the grapes intense aromas, freshness, and marked minerality, all characteristic of the wines from the Paolo Caccese winery.

Sustainability and Respect for the Environment

One of the most commendable aspects of this winery is its strong commitment to sustainability. The company implements eco-friendly practices such as rainwater recovery, responsible irrigation to prevent waste, targeted treatments in the vineyard, and self-generated electricity through a photovoltaic system. This approach not only protects the environment but also ensures the production of more authentic wines that honour the local territory..

Wines: Expressions of Quality and Passion

The Paolo Caccese winery produces twelve different types of wines white and red. The white wines include Friulano, Pinot Bianco, Traminer Aromatico, Sauvignon, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, and Malvasia—each showcasing the character of Collio. Among the red wines, Merlot and Cabernet Franc stand out, offering structured wines rich in nuances.

Two labels that particularly impressed me are the Malvasia and Traminer Aromatico. The Malvasia captures the true essence of Collio; it is fresh, aromatic, and flavorful, making it an excellent companion for fish dishes and fresh cheeses. The Traminer Aromatico is an intense and fragrant wine with notes of tropical fruit and white flowers, elegantly representing one of Friuli’s most captivating grape varieties.

An Experience to Live

Beyond the quality of the wines, what makes the Paolo Caccese winery truly special is the hospitality; Paolo and Veronica warmly welcome visitors, offering tastings that allow you to discover the history and philosophy of the winery up close; this authentic experience transforms wine into a narrative of family, territory, and passion.

The Paolo Caccese winery exemplifies a perfect balance between tradition and innovation. Each bottle tells a story of dedication and love for viticulture, providing a unique experience for wine enthusiasts. If you find yourself in Friuli, I highly recommend stopping by; you will discover a little gem of Collio and wines that deserve tasting.
