The Friulano vine: The Symbol of Friuli

Enolike il vitigno del Friulano: Il Simbolo del Friuli

Friulano (formerly Tocai Friulano): The Symbol of Friuli

The Friulano vine is the most representative white grape of the Friuli region, truly embodying the identity of Friulian winemaking. Known as Tocai Friulano, since 2007, it had to change its name due to a dispute with Hungary, which secured the exclusive right to the name “Tokaji” for its sweet wines. Despite this name change, Friulano has retained its connection to tradition and remains unique.

Characteristics of the Grape Variety

Friulano is a vigorous grape variety that adapts well to the diverse terroirs of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It thrives in hilly terrain, particularly in areas with ponca soils—a distinctive mix of marl and sandstone characteristic of the Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli regions.

Organoleptic Profile

The wine produced from this grape variety displays a straw-yellow colour with greenish reflections; the aroma is characterized by delicate aromas of white flowers, aromatic herbs, green apples, and almonds. It is fresh and savoury on the palate with a slightly almond finish, a distinctive trait that sets it apart from other Italian white wines.

Friulano is an exceptionally versatile wine. Its freshness and slight bitterness make it an ideal accompaniment to typical Friulian dishes such as Prosciutto di San Daniele, creating a classic and irresistible pairing; it also pairs well with Frico, a dish made with cheese and potatoes and with flavorful fish dishes, particularly those featuring creamed cod.

Friulano Today

In recent years, the Friulano grape variety has experienced a renaissance. Friulian producers increasingly recognize its value, experimenting with various winemaking techniques such as skin fermentation and ageing in amphorae to enhance its structure and complexity. Our selection of Friulano wines is diverse, offering something for every taste; enjoy the pleasure of choosing!

With its authentic character and rich history, Friulano continues to embody the winemaking spirit of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, winning over more enthusiasts in Italy and abroad.
